Can an H1B Visa Holder Work as a Volunteer?

Can a person on a H1-B visa work in her free time on a bootstrapped project as a minority shareholder and/or as a volunteer?

Generally, H1B volunteer work is only permitted for positions which are typically unpaid positions (like at non-profits, charitable orgs, etc). Volunteering for a position that is typically a paid position, such as an engineer or similar position, would most likely be viewed as unauthorized employment which violates the terms of the H1B.
