Can I Get a U.S. Driver's License with a Green Card?

The answer to this is yes! To get a U.S. driver’s license you must show proof that you are legally permitted to live or work in the U.S. This means that if you are a green card holder, then you can apply for a US driver's license with your green card and other relevant documents.

In order to obtain a driver's license, green card holders must go to their local DMV office to apply. Typically, the following documents are required for the application: Proof of Social Security Number, Passport, Green Card and a piece of registered mail in your name with your current address.

The actual documentation you'll need may vary from state to state, so it's best to call your local DMV office and double-check the information.

Can a permanent resident get a driver’s license or permit without the actual green card?

If you have lost your Green Card or it has expired, you will need to apply for a replacement Green Card before you can apply for a US driver's license.
